Paris is the capital of France and is also one of the biggest tourist destinations in Europe. Apart from the tourists that come from abroad even the French travel widely within France. With the introduction of paid holidays for industrial workers in the late 1930s, France has seen an increase in family tourism. Most of the workers in France receive five weeks of paid holidays on a yearly basis. Many of them spend time in places like Languedoc and Brittany. Some of the wealthier French would have two homes, one where they live regularly and other from where their families had migrated in the past.
Another popular location in France is the Mediterranean coast, especially the area that lies in the Provence-Côte d'Azur part. This region also includes the French Riviera which is also very popular. The Riviera was initially made popular by wealthy tourists from England as a winter resort in the 1860s. It has now become famous as a summer resort and people from all around the world visit the Riviera every year.
The number of tourists visiting the mountainous regions of France has been on the rise, especially the Rhône-Alpes region. Its popularity has increased mainly due to the winter sports it offers. Earlier people used to visit these mountains only due to health benefits but now the peaks are busy almost all of the year, especially resorts like Morzine and Chamonix, which are internationally famous.
